By His Side
‘By His Side’ is a three-part story about love triangle between close friends in their high school life. Cliche, right? But she has been successful in making it original with overflowing cuteness (maybe I am bias, but it’s my opinion, so there.) This story is printed together with the other two stories and published in ‘Ouji no Kikan’ manga.
So, the protagonist (the guy in the picture above), Haijima has been best friend with Shimizu since they’re kids. When they got into high school, Hachiya came into the picture. Their friendship continues and Haijima thought it will always be like that. However, one day Shimizu, who said he won’t date a girl if he doesn’t like the girl, confessed to Haijima that he has a girlfriend.
Shock brought new realization for Haijima. Haijima realized that he has been in love with Shimizu and he ran to Hachiya for help. Hachiya then concluded that actually Shimizu was a suitable partner for Haijima because Shimizu always babysitted Haijima. The notion of ‘maybe Shimizu doesn’t realize that he likes Haijima too’ was in the air. So, Haijima tried to make him realize it. He asked Shimizu whether his sunday free so they could hang out together to find out how important he was for him in comparison to his girlfriend.
He found that Shimizu was okay with spending his sunday with him, which meant he was important more than his girlfriend. And so, they hang out in fantasyland, embarrassing Shimizu because he went there with a guy. The fact that he’s still with Haijima made him convinced that Shimizu was actually love him more than friend.
But then, when they stopped by to eat, his girlfriend came. Apparently Shimizu let her come. They got introduced to each other and the day flew by. Haijima has his heart broken. He asked for consolation to Hachiya over the phone and he showed up.
Okay, behold! This is the peak of the first part. So freaking ‘WHAT!?’ and makes my heart throbbing…
At that moment, it is Hachiya’s turn to realize that actually he also has been falling in love with Haijima. ‘Really… I supposed that’s true…’ he said.
Yep! Totally, WHAAAAT!!! SO… SO.. SO CUTEEEEE!!!!
Because, hey, why are you suddenly kiss his teary eyes? And then… you KISS HIM??? Something’s wrong with your head, HACHIYAA??? O.O
And Junko closed the scene with humor. That’s good one hehe…
They met each other again in school the next day. Shimizu surprised to find Haijima’s eyes red and swollen. Haijima told lies that he cried the night before when watching anime and Shimizu believed that. Hachiya came to the classroom, offer Haijima a cooling sheet to cool down his swollen eyes, a so not-Hachiya-like act that was noticed by Shimizu.
You know why? Because Hachiya realize he like Haijima and do not want to waste his opportunity! Clever guy, he is.
Haijima has finally accepted his fate and let go of his love for Shimizu. He thought everything would be back to normal, but then…
SOOO CUUUUTEE!!! Hachiya is surprisingly a warm person if it is to the one he likes.
Hachiya continuously put up a cool front when he saw Haijima clinging to Shimizu like he’s always been. He tried to make his feeling clear to Haijima that he was serious about his confession in the day Haijima let go of his feeling for Shimizu (yep, Hachiya actually confess to him, saying “will you go out with me?” in the last scene of part 1. But he got no answer, indicating that Haijima saw it as a joke)
He offered to pay Haijima’s dinner as a way to get Haijima hang out together with him in Karaoke, even though sadly Haijima got stiff and asked Shimizu to tag along. When a girl stopped them on their way to the Karaoke to confess to Hachiya, Hachiya told Haijima to wait (so he cannot escape) firmly.
Shimizu, why don’t you think of it as strange that Hachiya only mentioned Haijima to wait, and not you too? Hehehe… he’s oblivious.
The scene change to the three of them hanging out in the Karaoke room. Shimizu was surprised to see Hachiya turned down the girl’s confession so fast and asked Haijima’s opinion, creating a tension in the air.
Shimizu then got a phone call from his work and dismissed himself immediately. Hachiya and Haijima started serious conversation about Haijima and Shimizu’s relationship. Frankly speaking, Hachiya was pissed and about to got more serious. He grabbed Haijima’s hand and he was about to pull him down to him but Shimizu burst into the room again because he forgot to pay.
Then… this picture happened. Gosh, Hachiya is so pissed! So badass!! XD (so cool) and Shimizu didn’t get a single clue why Hachiya seemed so angry…
After Shimizu has gone again, both of them engaged in a serious conversation. Hachiya reaffirmed again his intention to date him. Haijima agonizingly answered that he could not do that because all he wanted is for the three of them to remain friends.
Hachiya then went on berserk, saying that it’s impossible and forcing himself on Haijima, kissing him. He said, “I like you, and I wanted you to choose me. That’s the truth of the moment.” But when saw Haijima’s crying face with a hint of fear in it, Hachiya regained his composure and retracted himself from on top of Haijima. He went home, leaving Haijima behind thinking about what has been happening. About how they could not return again to how it used to be.
After that Haijima decided to avoid Hachiya. He don’t want to have unnecessary encounter with Hachiya if possible. However, Hachiya avoided him first, making him unsettling.
He confronted Hachiya about it and he explained that it was better if they kept distance from each other because he didn’t want to repeat what had happened at the karaoke room. Since the feeling was still there, it would make Haijima uncomfortable. And he didn’t want to lose his composure like that again.
Haijima who have recently grown aware of Hachiya’s feeling and his situation, felt dejected when Hachiya continued to avoid him. Shimizu noticed the situation between the two and asked Haijima to let him help them. But Haijima chose not to.
And then by some fate, the rain came. Haijima who didn’t bring umbrella decided to borrow one from the faculty office. There, he bumped into Hachiya who got himself in the same situation. Seeing Hachiya gave the umbrella up, Haijima forced his way, saying “Let’s go home together”, meaning to fix things with Hachiya.
On the way down to go out of school, Haijima raised the issue with Hachiya, accusing him of has been avoiding him and Haijima didn’t want it. Because even if Hachiya said not to worry about their friendship because of the distance, Haijima would still worry because Hachiya has been on his mind quite a lot lately.
Hachiya cornered Haijima after his sudden burst out of confession, trying to make it clear of what was exactly Haijima’s feeling for him. But then Haijima’s phone vibrated in his pocket. At the sudden interruption, Hachiya took Haijima’s phone out of his pocket and saw the caller ID.
As always… It was Shimizu. He thrust the phone back in front of Haijima’s eyes with a face as if he dared Haijima to take it. When Haijima decided to took the phone call, Hachiya felt a little piss. Yeah, he should have known it already since Shimizu always had a special place in Haijima’s heart. Like a fool…
But then, what Haijima told Shimizu over the phone startling him. He was surprised… and touched that Haijima prioritized him over Shimizu for the first time.
Look at his crying face… Haijima, don’t cry! I want to hug you so bad… D’: Well, Hachiya hugged him for me.
Hachiya then confessed his feeling to Haijima again whilst embracing him in his arms. Haijima was surprised that he didn’t know what he should do. He kept muttering Hachiya’s name over and over again until Hachiya let go of his hug, abandoning the bag, and wiped the tears that has been flowing out of his eyes.
With expectation, Hachiya encouraged him to say his feelings. And when Haijima finally said, “I love you”, they shared a kiss.
The next day, everything seemed to be in order. Normal as if like what it was before. Shimizu and Hachiya teased Haijima’s intellectuality that he might be a real idiot for having a red mark in the retaking test. Haijima was about to blame his failure to Hachiya because those days his mind was occupied by the thought of him but refrained himself from embarrassing himself.
And Here is the last scene…
It’s so cute! So cute! SO CUTE!! And they’re finally together. My stomach acts funny over and over again while reading it. This story is really cuteeee!
So how it is? the story? Isn’t it cute??? XD
There’s someone who post their commentary on Baka-Updates Manga. I’ll quote them here, because I perfectly agree with their judgment. From YouStillDontKnowMe on October 15th, 2013.
THIS IS THE BEST STORY OF THE MANGA! The characters were all there, the plot is quite cliche at the start and though the twist would seem quite off, as you progresses, all you could just read is something heavy but a heartwarming story. The plot is there not because it has to be there but because it really has something to tell the readers. This is the real work of Junko for me. I’m so captivated with it.
